Students, Families, and Community Members Meet to Demand “A-G” for all at
SBUSD

Future Leaders of America is hosting a virtual Education Justice Conference (Friday,
March 19th at 6:00PM – 7:30PM) where students, families, and leaders in education will
be present to hear concerns in regards to education inequities in SBUSD. We are
meeting to discuss the low rates of A-G completion especially in the Latinx community.
The A-G requirements are a sequence of courses that students must complete to be
minimally eligible for admission to a UC or a CSU. According to the CA Department of
Education only 38% of Latinx students at SBUSD in 2020 completed their A-G’s and are
eligible to apply to a 4 year public state university. 1 We expect these numbers to
worsen in the coming months and years as COVID19 disproportionately hurts
communities of color. We are pleading with the District to take bolder actions to reverse
these trends by hiring culturally proficient staff and teachers and providing A-G courses
for ALL . We can no longer let our Latinx youth fall behind.
We will be hearing from our youth, parents, and leaders in education to discuss this
pressing issue. Our youth and parents will be discussing their personal accounts
navigating the process into higher education. “Ed Trust West” ( https://west.edtrust.org )
will be highlighting the trends of inequities in our education system. We will also be
unveiling solutions to the school board to ensure every student that attends SBUSD is
on a college preparatory pathway and that the district has culturally competent staff. We
believe every student is capable of achieving their potential with the proper academic
support.
