A Time to Take a Stand
February 19, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pmFree
Our national issue of Civil Rights has a long-standing historical connection with the African American experience in our
country. This experience is critically important in knowing how to address the national, state, and local discourse on the
issues of race and racism for the purpose of addressing institutional and systemic change. Knowing history through
first-hand accounts by the counternarratives of historical and prominent individuals, who through their actions, took a
stand for social justice, serves as living examples of courage. Their bold actions teach us the importance of advocating
for diversity, inclusion, and equity. Our question to you is, “are you ready to Take a Stand?”
In Observance of Black History Month, please join us as we hear from Dr. Tommie Smith, former track and field athlete and wide receiver AFL who at the 1968 Summer Olympics gave the Black Power salute with John Carlos atop the medal post to protest racism and injustice against African Americans and Dr. Terrence Roberts one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who in 1957 were the first black students ever to attend Little Rock Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas.
